SmartNav is an in-vehicle navigation system that utilizes accurate map data and GPS satellite technology to graphically show the driver his current position and driving status, and provide detailed turn-by-turn directions to one or more destinations of his choice.

   The system consists of a color LCD display screen (resolution 640 x 480), a remote pointing device, a GPS antenna, and a base unit. The LCD screen is conveniently mounted on the vehicle's dashboard to give the driver the best possible view of the information being shown. The primary user interface to the SmartNav system is through a remote pointing device. The GPS antenna can be mounted in the vehicle anywhere there is an unobstructed view of the sky (such as at the bottom of the windshield). The base unit contains the single board computer and GPS receiver board as well as a small speaker that is used for verbal directions during routing. The base unit can be mounted under the seat or dashboard. The only time the owner needs to access the base unit is when he upgrades his map and points of interest data set.
